Buying new: what one trip means

When this trade says "new container", it means a one-trip unit: built in Asia, loaded once with export cargo, carried to Europe and sold from a depot here. That single laden voyage is what makes it economic to move a new container across the world at all.

We use both words on purpose. A one-trip container is the best condition anyone can buy outside the factory gate, and it has carried cargo once. Both are true, and a buyer told the second one before delivery is a buyer who can trust the first.

Expect original paint with minor transit marks, an unmarked 28 mm plywood floor, tight door gaskets and a current CSC plate. Container dimensions are the ISO figures for the size — one trip changes the condition, not the box.

What to confirm when ordering new

One-trip stock is consistent, so the questions move from condition to specification and supply.

  1. Build year & plate

Usually the current or previous year, stamped on the CSC plate. Ask if it matters to you.

  2. Colour & markings

Factory colours vary by production run. A specified RAL finish is a repaint, quoted separately.

  3. Batch consistency

Units from one batch and depot match closely. A lot assembled from several depots will not.

  4. Lead time

Availability differs by size — 40ft High Cube is the easiest to source in quantity.

What "new" covers

Exactly one grade sits under this heading. Everything else is used, and graded on the used scale.

One Trip

Best available

Factory-built container that has made a single loaded voyage from the builder to Europe. Sold as the best condition realistically available outside the factory gate.

What it suits
  • Buyers who want the longest service life and the cleanest starting point
  • Conversions, where every dent has to be worked around later
  • Presentation-sensitive uses: retail, events, client-facing sites
  • Cargo where a pristine interior matters
Worth knowing
  • It is not literally unused — expect minor transit marks and scuffed paint
  • Colour availability varies by what the builder ran; RAL matching is a modification
  • Manufacture year is usually current or previous year — ask if it matters to you

What one-trip condition looks like

The four details buyers ask us to describe over the phone, on a typical one-trip unit.

  • Side elevation of a shipping container in a single uniform factory coating, showing the corrugated panel profile

    Exterior

Original factory coating in one colour across the panel, with light transit marks.

  • Door end of a dark grey shipping container with clean locking bars, hinges and stencilled identification markings

    Doors & seals

Cam-operated locking bars that swing freely, on gaskets that have not been compressed for years.

  • Interior of a shipping container with light-coloured walls and an unmarked plywood floor, looking towards the far end

    Floor

Unmarked 28 mm marine-grade plywood — the clearest difference from used stock.

  • CSC safety approval plate on a one-trip container door, showing a current approval reference, maximum gross mass and tare

    CSC plate

A current safety approval, stamped once rather than re-examined.

Illustrative of typical one-trip condition. These are not photographs of the unit you would receive: paint colour, stencilling and the extent of transit marking vary by build batch, operator and voyage. Condition is confirmed against the specific unit at quotation.

Buying new: common questions

What buyers ask before ordering one-trip stock.

Is a one trip container really new?
It is new in the sense the trade uses the word: current production, full paint system, unmarked floor, full service life. It has carried cargo exactly once, which is why we call it one-trip rather than unused. See one-trip containers.
Can I choose the colour?
You can choose from what current production has run, and beyond that a specified RAL colour is available as a repaint at extra cost. State the requirement on the enquiry rather than after ordering.
Do new containers come with a CSC plate?
Yes. One-trip units carry a valid CSC safety approval plate, which is what makes them usable as freight equipment.
Will several new containers match each other?
Only if you ask. Units from a single build batch and depot match closely; a lot assembled from several depots will not. Say on the enquiry whether uniformity matters.
When is used the better buy?
When the container will stand on a yard and never move again. Wind and watertight does that job for materially less. Buy new when appearance, conversion quality or maximum service life genuinely matter.
