Four lengths, two heights, one width. This is what each combination gives you, and which constraint usually decides.

Container sizing looks like a volume question and almost never is. Payload, site access and cost per cubic metre pull in different directions, and the constraint that binds is usually not the one the buyer started with.

The order to decide in

    Can the site take the delivery?

    A 40ft vehicle needs roughly 30 m of straight, firm approach. If it cannot get in, the size question is already answered.

  2. 02

    Is the cargo dense or bulky?

    Dense cargo fills a 20ft on weight before volume. Bulky cargo fills a 40ft on volume before weight.

  3. 03

    Is height a constraint or an opportunity?

    High Cube adds 305 mm inside for very little money — unless a bridge, gate or deck rules it out.

  4. 04

    One large or two small?

    One 40ft beats two 20ft on cost per cubic metre. Two 20ft beat one 40ft on access and on being movable afterwards.
