A double door container, also called a tunnel container, has a full set of double doors at each end. Everything else — dimensions, floor, structure, corner castings — matches a standard dry container of the same size.
The practical gains are access and division. Cargo can be loaded from one end and discharged from the other without shuttling; a 40ft unit can be split down the middle with a partition and let to two tenants, each with their own doors; and on a constrained site a container can be positioned so both ends serve different working areas.

Where the second door pays for itself
- Drive-through loading — a forklift enters one end and exits the other, halving the handling distance on long-run loading.
- Two-tenant storage — a 40ft unit divided into two 20ft compartments, each independently accessible and lockable.
- Workshop layouts — one end as the working face, the other for stock, without walking material through the workspace.
- Awkward sites — access from whichever end the site actually allows, decided after the unit is placed rather than before.
Structural trade-offs
Removing a corrugated end wall and replacing it with a door frame reduces the racking stiffness that a closed end contributes. Purpose-built double door units are engineered for it; converted units vary with the workshop that did the work. Tare is a little higher than a standard box, typically around 2 400 kg on a 20ft.
Two door ends also means twice as many gaskets, hinges and locking bars to maintain. It is not a reason to avoid the type, but it is a reason to inspect both ends rather than one.
Typical uses
Divided storage
Drive-through loading
Workshops and welfare
