The 20ft High Cube is a standard 20ft container built to the 9 ft 6 in external height instead of 8 ft 6 in. The footprint, the corner castings and the road handling are identical to a standard 20ft unit; only the height changes, and with it the internal volume — 37.4 m³ instead of 33.2 m³.
Be aware that 20ft High Cube is a genuinely scarcer type than 40ft High Cube. Depot availability across Europe is thinner and lead times are longer, particularly in one-trip condition. Where the extra 305 mm earns its money
Two cases justify the premium over a standard 20ft box. The first is cargo that will not fit under 2 393 mm: machinery on stands, tall palletised loads, and anything that has to be walked in on a pallet truck under a fixed superstructure.
The second is conversion. Once a floor build-up and an insulated ceiling are fitted, a standard 20ft container leaves a finished internal height of roughly 2.2 m. A High Cube leaves closer to 2.5 m, which is the difference between a usable office and a cramped one.
Height restrictions to check before ordering
A High Cube on a standard container chassis sits about 300 mm higher than a standard container. That is rarely a problem on European motorways but it does matter for site entrances, car park decks, low bridges on the last kilometre, and any building the unit has to pass under during placement. Measure the lowest point on the delivery route, not just the gate.
