New 40ft Shipping Containers
One-trip 40ft standard-height containers — a smaller share of newbuild output than High Cube, so lead time is the thing to plan around.
One-trip 40ft containers at standard 8 ft 6 in height are current-production units sold after a single laden voyage into Europe. They are the same box as a used 40ft in every dimension; what differs is coating condition, floor condition and remaining service life.
The practical planning point is supply. Newbuild production is heavily weighted towards 40ft High Cube, so standard-height one-trip units are less consistently available across European depots. Where the extra height is acceptable, High Cube is usually quicker and often no more expensive.
Standard height or High Cube
Buy standard height when a height restriction on site, in a building or on the delivery route makes 2 896 mm impossible. Buy High Cube in every other case: more volume, better availability, and equivalent or better resale.

Payload planning on a new 40ft
A new 40ft unit has a tare around 3 750 kg against a plated maximum gross of 30 480 kg, leaving roughly 26 730 kg of payload — less than a 20ft container. If your cargo is dense, this is the constraint that decides the size, not volume.
