One-trip 20ft containers: current-production units with a full coating system, a sound floor and a valid CSC plate, sold after a single laden voyage.
A new 20ft container in this market is a one-trip unit. It left the builder in Asia within the last year or two, carried one load to Europe, and is sold from a depot here. Nothing else is realistically available: an unused container exists only at the factory gate, and shipping one empty across the world is not something anyone pays for.
What you are buying is the best condition on the market — original paint, unmarked plywood, tight door gaskets, a current CSC plate and a full service life ahead of it.
What drives the price of a new 20ft container
- Newbuild steel and box prices — the underlying cost moves with steel and with Asian factory output
- Freight rates on the head-haul — one-trip units arrive as freight, so ocean rates feed straight into the landed cost
- Depot location — a unit at the depot nearest you avoids a repositioning move
- Colour — standard production colours cost less than a specified RAL finish
- Quantity — a lot of ten prices differently from a single unit, mostly through the transport leg
What to expect on arrival, honestly
Minor transit marks on the paint, occasional scuffing on the door bars, and manufacturer's markings and stencilling from the operator whose cargo it carried. The floor should be unmarked, the doors should seal and swing freely, and the CSC plate should be current.
If you need a container with no markings at all, or in a specific RAL colour, that is a repaint and it is quoted as a modification. Ask at RFQ stage.
When a used 20ft is the better buy
If the container is going to stand on a yard as a store and never move again, the extra you pay for one-trip condition buys service life you may not need. Used 20ft containers in wind-and-watertight grade do the same job for materially less. Buy new when appearance, conversion quality or maximum life genuinely matter.
