Shipping Containers Delivered to Austria

Road delivery into Austria planned around the ATU number, the Austrian truck driving bans and the building code of the Land where the container will stand.

Austria is an intra-EU road delivery, and the origin is compared against the address rather than assumed: the road leg to Vorarlberg or Salzburg is a different proposition from the one to Vienna, Graz or Klagenfurt. Austrian container traffic runs through both the North Sea and the Adriatic — the Port of Hamburg names Austria among the most important destinations for its container trains, and Koper counts Austria among its key hinterland markets — which is why the answer differs from one Land to the next.

What shapes an Austrian delivery more than distance is the clock. Heavy trucks may not run at night, from Saturday afternoon or on Sundays and public holidays, and the A12 through Tyrol adds rules of its own.

Driving bans that decide the delivery day

In practice a Saturday delivery has to be finished by early afternoon, and a Friday delivery that slips waits until Monday. Give us a weekday window, and say if the site can only receive on particular days.

  • Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays — trucks and articulated vehicles over 7.5 t, and trucks with a trailer where either exceeds 3.5 t, may not run from 15:00 to 24:00 on Saturdays or from 00:00 to 22:00 on Sundays and public holidays (§ 42 StVO)
  • Night — trucks over 7.5 t may not run from 22:00 to 05:00 unless they carry a low-noise certificate
  • Summer Saturdays — the annual driving-ban calendar adds named routes; for 2026, every Saturday from 4 July to 29 August from 08:00 to 15:00 on roads including the B 178 between Lofer and Wörgl, and on the A 4 between Schwechat and Nickelsdorf until 5 September

Tyrol: dosing days and the A12 night ban

On days announced in advance in the Tyrolean dosing calendar, heavy traffic on the A12 is metered at a checkpoint at Kufstein Nord from 05:00 in the direction of Innsbruck. A delivery to an address in the Inn valley on one of those days needs more time, so check the calendar before fixing a date.

The A12 between Langkampfen and Zirl also has a year-round night ban for trucks over 7.5 t under Tyrol's air-quality rules, starting earlier on winter weekdays, and the low-noise exemption does not apply there. Euro VI trucks loading or unloading within the zone are exempt — the exemption a delivery to an address inside the zone relies on. Shipping containers are not among the goods covered by Tyrol's sectoral driving ban.

The ATU number and the acquisition in Austria

The Austrian VAT identification number (UID-Nummer) is AT followed by nine characters, the first of which is the letter U — so ATU and eight digits. Against a valid UID the container is delivered VAT-free from Germany, and the Austrian business accounts for the intra-Community acquisition at the 20 % rate (Erwerbsteuer). Where it is entitled to deduct input tax, it deducts the same amount in the same return, so no payment arises.

A UID may only be given for business purchases. A container bought for private use cannot be supplied against it.

Building law belongs to the Länder

Austria has no single building code: building law is a matter for the federal states, so there are nine Bauordnungen, and procedures also vary from municipality to municipality. Each sorts projects into those needing nothing, those needing a notification and those needing a permit, and applications go to the municipality — in Vienna, MA 37.

None of that is written specifically for containers, so whether yours needs a notification or a permit depends on the Land, the municipality, the size and how long it stays. Ask the Gemeinde before the delivery date, particularly for a 40ft unit or one that will be fitted out as a workspace.

How a delivered price is built

Container and transport are priced as one movement, against the address where the unit has to end up.

  1. Destination

Postcode and specification. The postcode moves the price more than any other line.

  2. Supply point

Chosen for the lowest delivered price, not the lowest depot price.

  3. Vehicle

Chosen by what the site can physically take.

    • Tilt-bed where there is run-off
    • Crane truck where there is not
    • Side loader for tight access
    • Depot collection if preferred
  4. Quotation

One delivered figure, with inclusions and exclusions stated.

The cheapest container is rarely the cheapest delivered

A cheaper unit further away often costs more once the road leg is added. Supply is therefore chosen against your address, and prices are quoted delivered rather than ex works by default.

Containers supplied to Austria

  • 20ft Shipping Container

    20ft Shipping Container

    Approx. 33.2 m³

The standard 6.06 m ISO dry container: 33.2 m³ of volume, up to 28 t of payload, and the easiest size to move by road almost anywhere in the world.

  • 40ft Shipping Container

    40ft Shipping Container

    Approx. 67.7 m³

Twice the length of a 20ft box for roughly twice the volume and slightly less payload — 12.19 m, 67.7 m³, 26.7 t.

  • 40ft High Cube Container

    40ft High Cube Container

Four site checks before road delivery

The last hundred metres decide the vehicle, and the vehicle decides much of the price.

  • Access

Can an articulated vehicle reach the placement point? Gate and road width, and any weight or height limit on the approach.

  • Space

A tilt-bed needs roughly its own length again behind it to slide the container off.

  • Unloading

Tilted off, lifted by crane truck, or handled by your own equipment — the biggest single variable.

  • Ground

Level, firm and able to carry the corner loads. Soft or sloping ground turns a delivery into a return trip.

Frequently asked questions

Can a container be delivered in Austria on a Saturday?
In the morning, usually yes. Trucks over 7.5 t may not run from 15:00 on Saturday until 22:00 on Sunday, and in summer 2026 some routes, such as the B 178 between Lofer and Wörgl, are closed to them on Saturdays from 08:00 to 15:00 as well. A weekday window is the safer plan.
Which VAT number do you need from an Austrian company?
The UID-Nummer: ATU followed by eight digits. It has to validate in the EU's VIES system for the delivery to be invoiced without VAT. Your business then declares the acquisition in Austria.
Do I need a building permit for a container in Austria?
It depends on the Land and the municipality, because each of the nine federal states has its own building code. Depending on size, use and duration a container can need nothing, a notification or a permit. Your Gemeinde gives the binding answer.
Does the Tyrol truck dosing affect a delivery to Tyrol?
On dosing days, yes: heavy traffic towards Innsbruck is metered at Kufstein Nord from 05:00, which can add hours. The days are published in advance, so a delivery to the Inn valley can be planned around them.
Can I buy a used container delivered to Austria?
Yes. Used containers are supplied in the same grades as anywhere else — for storage, wind and watertight is usually enough; cargo worthy only matters if the unit will carry freight. The delivered price is quoted on request for your postcode.
