Used 40ft High Cube Containers

The most available used large container in Europe — 76.4 m³ and 2 698 mm of internal height, in every grade from cargo worthy to as-is.

Used 40ft High Cube containers come off-hire in greater numbers than any other large size, which makes them the easiest to buy in quantity and the most predictable on price across European depots.

They are also the container the conversion market runs on. The extra 305 mm of internal height is what allows a finished floor and an insulated ceiling while still leaving a usable room, so demand from converters sits alongside demand from storage and freight buyers.

Buying used for conversion

A used High Cube is a legitimate conversion base and usually the economically sensible one — but the grade matters differently here. Cosmetic damage is irrelevant if the panels will be lined, while a racked frame or a rotten floor is fatal because everything downstream is built off them.

Ask for units that are square with a sound floor, and accept dents. That is a cheaper specification than "good condition" and a better one for the job.

  • Frame square and doors aligned — everything is built off this
  • Floor sound; plan to replace it entirely if the design needs a level base
  • Panel dents acceptable where the interior will be lined
  • Check the gooseneck tunnel against your floor build-up early
  • Confirm whether previous repairs used non-original steel that complicates cutting

Grades and what they cost you here

For a static conversion, wind and watertight is normally sufficient and is where the value sits. Pay up to cargo worthy only if the finished unit will be shipped as freight — many converted units are, and losing the CSC plate through unapproved cutting is a problem discovered late.

Frequently asked questions

Does cutting a container void its CSC approval?
Structural modification can invalidate the safety approval unless it is carried out and re-approved under the applicable procedure. If the finished unit needs to travel as freight equipment, treat approval as a design constraint from the start rather than a question at the end.
Is a used High Cube cheaper than a used standard 40ft?
Sometimes. High Cube dominates supply, so the larger box occasionally prices below the scarcer standard-height one. Ask for both on the RFQ.
